Beck Storer's "Pretty Little Things": A Glowing Tribute to Medical Research

Art Installation Celebrates the Beauty of Biology in Vibrant Fluorescent Colours

Beck Storer's award-winning art installation, "Pretty Little Things," is a unique exploration of the beauty found in medical research. This large-scale project reinterprets microscopic images into abstract patterns, creating a visual narrative that glows in the dark.

Storer's inspiration for "Pretty Little Things" came from the delicate and intricate forms found in biology when viewed through a microscope. This world of wonder, usually hidden from public view, is brought to life in a vibrant fluorescent colour palette. The project is a collaboration with the University of Melbourne, with students, staff, and researchers contributing microscopic images for reinterpretation.

What sets this installation apart is its glow-in-the-dark feature. Selected parts of the artwork are highlighted and embellished, creating a dynamic visual narrative. The installation's large scale, over 250 meters long, and bright colour palette further enhance its impact.

The production process was unique as well. The adhesive fluro vinyl used for this project, typically used for decals and signage, was printed on directly using solvent UV inks and a wide format digital printer. This innovative approach reduced material wastage and unnecessary costs.

The installation required over 250 metres of fluro adhesive vinyl and over 40 individual bay artworks. Each bay was created in six printed sections, each with three layers - the print, the glow-in-the-dark pieces, and a clear vinyl seal. The intricate installation process took over ten days to complete.

"Pretty Little Things" is part of Melbourne's Metro Tunnel Creative Program, which aims to enhance city life alongside major development projects. The challenge was to create an engaging, light, and memorable site in an area that can be dark and is frequented by thousands daily. The result is a stunning installation that presents the beauty of research to the public eye.

The project was awarded the Golden A' Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design Award in 2019, a testament to its outstanding creativity and impact. "Pretty Little Things" will be on display to the public until 2020, illuminating the world of medical research in a whole new light.
